• L.A. Noire Is Coming | The folks behind 'Grand Theft Auto' are rereleasing a classic detective game this holiday season

The versions of L.A. Noire for PS4 and Xbox One, which also include the original game and all downloadable content, boast their own improvements: enhanced lighting and clouds, new cinematic camera angles and high resolution textures. Rockstar is also supporting 4K resolution for L.A. Noire on PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X.

The developer’s HTC Vive title will include seven self-contained cases from the original L.A. Noire “rebuilt specifically for virtual reality.”

L.A. Noire for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files, are slated to arrive Nov. 14.

The original L.A. Noire was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May 2011 to critical acclaim. A Windows PC version was released later that year.

When Rockstar Games isn't meticulously crafting a new entry in the "Grand Theft Auto" or "Red Dead Redemption" video game series, the studio rarely makes other games. There are the occasional exceptions, like "Bully" and "Table Tennis" (really!), but Rockstar tends to focus on its heaviest hitters.

Why? Because "Grand Theft Auto" makes big money. Rockstar Games

2011's "L.A. Noire" — a gritty detective story set in 1940s Los Angeles, which focused more on detective work than on shooting bad guys — is another such exception. Rather than hijacking cars and shooting at anyone in your way, "L.A. Noire" was about working police cases. Much of the game was spent determining whether people were lying based on speech patterns and facial recognition or engaging in verbal swordplay with your colleagues. There's shooting, and chases, and you can drive around a gorgeously detailed 1940s Los Angeles, but the game is really about doing "CSI"-style detective work.

And this November, it's getting reborn on slightly more modern hardware: the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch. (The game was originally an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC title.)

A virtual reality version of the game is even in the works, dubbed "L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files." Rockstar says it will feature seven of the cases from the original game, all re-created in VR so you can experience them far more personally.

Rockstar Games says all rereleases of "L.A. Noire" will come with the entire original game plus all additional content that was sold separately, but because there's a horsepower gap between the Xbox One/PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch, the game will have some minor differences on the different systems.

Here's how Rockstar describes the Switch version:

"L.A. Noire for the Nintendo Switch features the complete original game and all additional downloadable content, with specific enhancements including a Joy-Con mode with gyroscopic, gesture-based controls, HD rumble and new wide and over-the-shoulder camera angles, plus contextual touch screen controls for portable detective work."

And here's how Rockstar describes the version for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One:

"L.A. Noire for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One delivers the complete original game and all additional downloadable content with a range of technical enhancements for greater visual fidelity and authenticity, including enhanced lighting and clouds, new cinematic camera angles, high resolution textures and more. Plays natively in 1080p for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, and stunning 4K for PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, these versions capture the grit and grime of the City of Angels like never before."

Even in 2011, Rockstar Games' "LA Noire" was a looker. We haven't seen what the new versions look like just yet. Rockstar Games

The game is planned for launch across the Switch, the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4, and the HTC Vive on November 14.
